The UK Singles Chart is one of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company that calculates the best-selling singles of the week in the United Kingdom.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=The Official UK Charts Company )〕 Before 2004, the chart was only based on the sales of physical singles with airplay figures and digital downloads excluded from the official chart. This list shows singles that peaked in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart during 1997, as well as songs which peaked in 1996 and 1998 but were in the top 10 in 1997. The entry date is when the song appeared in the top 10 for the first time. 219 singles were in the top ten in 1997. U2 frontman Bono had five top 10 entries throughout the year. Four of these were with the band, the most successful of which was the number 3 hit "Staring at the Sun" in April. "Discothèque" peaked at number 6 in February, "Please" made number 7 in September and "Last Night on Earth" reached number 10 in July. His other appearance was on the BBC charity single for Children in Need, "Perfect Day", alongside artists such as Boyzone, David Bowie, Elton John and the original composer of the song Lou Reed. The song entered the chart in November and spent 3 weeks at number-one, and 9 weeks in the top 10. Along with U2, five other acts had four singles in the top 10: George Michael, Boyzone, 911, Texas, Backstreet Boys and Brett Anderson from the brit-pop band Suede, who also appeared on "Perfect Day" and three singles with his band. The biggest selling single of the year, was Elton John's reworking of his 1973 single "Candle in the Wind. The song was recorded as a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in 1997. It was released as a double-A side with "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" and spent 13 weeks in the top ten, including five weeks at number-one. It sold almost 4.8 million copies, also becoming the best-selling single of 1990s and the 20th century. Bubblegum pop group Aqua had the second best-selling single of the year with "Barbie Girl", which sold 1.59 million copies, followed by Faith Evans and Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You". Songs by Will Smith, Spice Girls and Chumbawumba were also in the top ten best-selling singles of the year. ==Top-ten singles==
